Woodlesford Canal

Woodlesford Canal has been the main canal for Allerton Bywater Victoria Angling Club for many years now, and has regular matches throughout the spring and summer months. With the canal offering a bit of everything for the angler, you never know what could turn up in your landing net next. The main style of fishing here if pleasure and match fishing. The canal has produced big bags of silvers and bream in matches and the best methods for these are to pole fish at the bottom of the near slope and ledger for the bigger fish towards the marina entrance or the far bank depending whereabouts you are on the stretch. As well as silvers and bream, there are carp to be caught along the stretch, with carp to 20lb+ being known to live in the area. However these carp are quite nomadic and tricky to catch, so location is a must. The likeliest areas are the marina mouth and the old oil tanker moorings. The canal is home to some decent sized predators too, with perch to over 2lb being caught and pike to doubles figures. Dead baits tend to pick out the bigger pike while drop shotting and spinning produces the perch and jacks.

Joint Aire and Calder Canal

The main target species are roach, with bags of over 30lb recorded. Bream and skimmers are in abundance along with perch and some big gudgeon. Other species that are caught to a lesser extent are trout, eels, carp, chub, rudd and tench. Most anglers use the pole as the main method of attack but stick float, waggler and feeder tactics all work. Main baits are maggot, pinkie, squat and caster but never forget to take some hemp as this usually sorts out the better quality roach. Most anglers tend to fish these baits over a bed of ground bait.
